Black Box Mandate in New Cars

News broadcasts have reported about the NHTSA and their announcement that they plan to mandate event data recorders to be installed in new cars, trucks, SUVs and minivans.  In usual media fashion, some of the details got lost in translation and this created quite the unnecessary stir among opposition.  Car and Driver Magazine recently reported some of the truths behind the rumors and we have provided those here for you. First, Car and Driver pointed out that this is not NEW news.  In fact, they specifically reported that the NHTSA has been talking about this kind of mandate since 2006.  The most current reports about this from the NHTSA is that they hope to put the ruling into effect by 2014.  Next, there have been talks that the White House “signed off” on the NHTSA’s proposal.  In an article in a Detroit newspaper, this notion was promoted as if it was done with ease and without the proper chain of command in place.  This is not so.  The proposed regulation has been cleared by the
