Cars With Biometric Sensors?

Weiss Toyota ScionIt’s hard to imagine what vehicles will look like in the future, but we may have an early idea into the technology they will have on board.  This technology includes biometric sensors.  Biometric sensors are being designed to monitor drivers in new, innovative ways aimed to help them avoid accidents by picking up on changes in pulse, blood pressure, and breathing patterns.  Automakers are hoping to design systems that will pick up on these changes and to also equip them with the ability to use crash avoidance systems to stop accidents from happening.  A larger goal would be to detect and minimize driver distraction and stress.  Such advanced functions would turn off your cell phone’s ringer in response to situations where more focus is needed.  Although, this technology is noted as being fairly close to hitting the showroom floor, privacy and regulatory issues are expected to stand in the way.

Advancements in this type of technology are expected to increase as our roads are filled with more aging drivers and distracted, stressed out individuals.  Statistics show a 20% increase in drivers over the age of 65, compared to just ten years ago and distracted drivers are on the rise as cell phones and other devices are increasingly used by those behind the wheel.  The bottom line is that until this type of added safety is common place, drivers need to take a proactive role in their driving safety.
