Is a Hybrid or Electric Toyota Car Right for You

As the economy shifts and we start hearing phrases like “fiscal cliffs” and even worse…falling off the edge of it, people get more and more concerned about the cost of living and how it is going to impact their overall standard of living.  The thought of rising fuel prices has many people considering new methods of automobile manufacturing.  Specifically, hybrid and electric technology are becoming a much more appealing option that buyers are willing to explore.  Analysts are suggesting that gas prices could reach $4.25 a gallon nationally by late April, according to recent reports from Edmunds.com.  Some cities, such as Los Angeles and Chicago may even see $5 a gallon.

Traditionally, hybrids and electric alternatives haven’t hit home with consumers in the market to save money.  The main reason being that electric cars specifically pose a new sort of challenge to owners when confronted with keeping it fully charged, and in the end, the higher sticker price of these cars tended to offset any fuel savings that one would achieve through ownership of one compared to a gas guzzling car that costs much less.  Times have changed, and with new government incentives and continued rising costs of fuel, people are seeing the tangible savings that are possible…even with the still higher priced hybrids and EVs.

If you are trying to decide whether or not it would be financially rewarding for you to purchase a more expensive car for the fuel savings benefits, the first step is to compare the car you have your eye on with its hybrid counterpart, if one exists.  A good example of this is the Toyota Camry.  According to Edmunds.com, “The Toyota Camry Hybrid (TMV $25,292; EPA rating 43/39 mpg) reduces the payback from seven years at $3 per gallon to four years at $5 per gallon compared with a regular Camry (TMV $21,758; EPA rating 25/35 mpg).”
