Keeping your Toyota’s brakes maintained is necessary for the safety of your family.  With that in mind, Toyota has designed their vehicles to tell you when brake service is needed.  Let’s take a look at the four ways a Toyota will do that.

1. Brake Light – Next time you get into your Toyota, be sure to check this one out.  The brake light is located on your dash and normally indicates the engagement of your emergency brake.  But if your emergency brake is not engaged and the light is on, you need to take that as a warning that something is wrong.  Pull over and get your Toyota to the Wiess service center as soon as possible.

2. Increased Stopping Time – Toyota recommends, that once you notice an increase in the time it takes you to stop, that you schedule your vehicle for an appointment with your Toyota service center.  This may sound extra precautionary, but you know your vehicle the best, and if your notice a problem it’s best take it in for a quick check-up.

3. Worn Pads – Driving on worn out brake pads will lead to rotor damage and an increased service bill.  To avoid these issues, be sure to know how your brake pads are wearing by keeping up on scheduled maintenance visits.  Be sure to ask your Toyota technician how worn your pads are and how that translates into miles driven.  Technicians refer to these stats in percentages, so if you are told you have 50% brake life left you know that your pads are half-way through their expected service time.

4. Strange Sounds – Your brakes will make two noises that are important to take seriously.  The first is a high-pitched squeal indicating the thinning of the pads and the other is metal on metal grinding indicating the complete loss of the brake pad.  Both need to be addressed quickly, but it is recommended that once you hear the grinding noise you bring your car in asap.
