Out of the seventeen new booster style child safety seats introduced in 2012, fifteen have been given the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s rating of “Best Bet.”  This is the highest number of “Best Bet” seats introduced since the IIHS ratings started in 2008.  These ratings are very promising because they indicate proper manufacturing of most seats being introduced into the market place.

In order to receive the “Best Bet” rating, a seat must provide a child between the ages of four and eight with proper belt positioning in almost any car, minivan, or SUV.  Seats can also be given a “Good Bet” rating indicating an acceptable fit in most vehicles or a rating of not recommended meaning the seat does not provide proper belt placement for most children.

Parents can expect a variety of seats on the “Best Bet” list.  The IIHS indicates having both highback and backless seats on the list and ones ranging in price from $19 to $300.  This variety of style and price points makes picking a seat less stressful and affordable for all parents.

Anne McCartt, Institute senior vice president for research, made this statement regarding the improvements to booster seats:

 ”Booster manufacturers have risen to the Institute’s challenge to improve seat design, giving parents more choices than ever when shopping for a booster that will provide a good, safe fit for their children.”
