Dangers of Driving Drowsy

St Louis Toyota DealersKnowing you are sharing the road with an intoxicated driver is scary and quite infuriating. However, studies have shown that driving while sleep deprived can be just as deadly as driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Even missing a couple hours of sleep can greatly affect the manner in which you drive. It will slow your reaction time, besides the obvious of putting you at greater risk of actually falling asleep behind the wheel. All new and used Toyota cars are built with safety as a top priority. However, much of your safety will be your own responsibility. Driving while well-rested is up to you.

According to the National Highway Safety Administration many of the collisions occurring as a result of drowsy driving happen late at night or early in the morning, they are likely to be serious collisions, a vehicle tends to leave the roadway, they usually happen on a high-speed road, and the driver is typically alone. In addition, they say that young males between the ages of 16 and 29 are at highest risk of this type of collision.

It is important to be completely rested when driving. Try to get the recommended amount of sleep prior to driving. Also, pay attention to any possible drowsy side effects of certain medications. Allow yourself ample time to adjust to medications before driving. Steer clear of consuming any type of alcoholic beverage. Alcohol will enhance drowsiness, and greatly impair your ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. Even just one drink can significantly increase drowsiness. If you feel you may be getting drowsy while driving try opening a window, turning up the radio, or more effectively, pull over and rest. Even a cat nap of 5 to ten minutes can significantly reduce drowsiness.
