Auto Makers Respond to NHTSA’s Distracted Driving Stance

There has been a great amount of focus on the effects of distracted driving. Many automotive manufacturers provided a solution of sorts by equipping many of their vehicles with technology which would allow a driver to remain connected to their smartphone or other devices within the vehicle while they were driving. However, it is now becoming apparent that even these technologies are unable to diminish driver distraction enough to make a large enough impact on this. As a result, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has been pushing for the government to create laws against using even the technology within cars and trucks, as they can be distracting as well. They are also suggesting banning the use of smartphones in the vehicle altogether.
“Distracted driving is unsafe, irresponsible and can have deadly consequences,” NHTSA Administrator David Strickland said.

Auto makers are taking a position on these suggestions. They believe that it won’t make much of an impact to ban everything from the vehicle, as drivers would still find a way to engage in these actions while driving. We, as drivers, have become so accustomed to multitasking, especially while driving. In reality, driver distraction has been an issue for years before cell phones were even brought into vehicles. However, having everything at our fingertips has definitely impacted the amount of distraction on our roadways.

Each driver must take responsibility for what they do within their vehicle, while driving. It must be the responsibility of the driver to know when to set down the phone, wait to answer emails, and abstain from sending and receiving text messages. Make safety your top priority when driving your new or used Toyota car St. Louis MO.
