Potential Technology Restrictions

Toyota St LouisThere has been a great deal of focus on distracted driving and the potentially devastating consequences of the action. To this, automakers have responded with new technology allowing drivers to remain connected while driving. Some of these include things which will allow a driver to make and receive calls while driving simply through a touch of a button located on the steering wheel or through simple voice commands. Some of these technologies can be found in Bluetooth technology which can be beneficial to those needing to be on the phone while traveling. You can ask to have Bluetooth technology installed in your new Toyota Sienna St. Louis minivan. Other such technologies have been helpful it is apparent that some of this technology does little for diminishing distraction. As a result the U.S. Department of Transportation has recommended all auto makers to disable such applications which allow drivers to access social media, surf the web, or send text messages while driving. The point is to eliminate any technologies within a vehicle which would potentially require the driver to take their eyes off the road for more than two seconds, or remove their hands from the steering wheel.

“Increasingly, data shows that as technology evolves, cell phones aren’t the only potential distraction in vehicles,” said Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, who has made distracted driving his signature safety issue.

“Many car makers are now developing in-vehicle electronic systems that can give directions, post to social networking sites and search the Internet.”

Legislation was proposed to eliminate the use of cell phone within the car altogether. This was overturned. Much of your distraction while driving is your own responsibility. It is important to use common sense and discretion whenever you are behind the wheel.
