The use of red light cameras is an increasingly popular practice among communities around the nation.   These high-tech stop lights are equipped with the ability to take a picture of those violating the need to stop and have proven the most effective in violations happening 1.5 seconds or more after the light turns red.

The latest study conducted by the IIHS examined the use of red light cameras in the city of Arlington, VA starting in June 2010.  At that time, the city installed red light camera devices at four of it’s busiest intersections.  The city then gave drivers a 30-day warning period and did not issue any citations for violations made during that time.  The city also made the installation of the cameras public, told drivers of the warning period, told them when citations would start for violations, and hung warning signage at each stop light equipped with the cameras.

After one year of issuing tickets for violations made at these stop lights, the number of individuals running the red light had gone down.  The specific statistical breakdown from the study indicated:

“Violations occurring at least 0.5 seconds after the light turned red were 39 percent less likely than would have been expected without cameras.”
“Violations occurring at least 1 second after were 48 percent less likely, and the odds of a violation occurring at least 1.5 seconds into the red phase fell 86 percent.”

The senior vice president for research at IIHS and the study’s lead author, Ann McCartt, had this to say about the study findings:  ”This study provides fresh evidence that automated enforcement can get drivers to modify their behavior.”  Sounds like red light camera devices will continue to gain in popularity and help to decrease traffic incidents for years to come.
