According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, “3,092 people died in crashes involving a distracted driver in 2010, the most recent year for which there is data available, and an estimated 416,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving a distracted driver.”  Distracted driving is a major problem on our nation’s roads.  Combating this problem starts with making people aware of just what distracted driving is and then making a commitment to personally avoid the behavior.

Examples of Distracted Driving Include:

Eating
Grooming
Texting
Adjusting the radio or other dials
Talking to passengers
Talking on a cell phone

According to the National Safety Council, “Driver distractions have joined alcohol and speeding as leading factors in fatal and serious injury crashes.”
Interestingly, researchers have found that individuals are actually not able to fully multitask.  Focusing on more than one cognitive challenge at a time always leaves one task short changed.  This results in what is called “inattention blindness” leading the driver to not actually see up to fifty percent of what is happening in their immediate driving environment.

Drivers need to remember these facts when considering what activities they will partake in while driving.  A good starting point is making a commitment to not use cell phones while driving.  Texting and talking are both linked to an increase in fatal crashes, even when a hands free device is being used.
